Hi! I'm a computer science instructor with a passion for both technology and Japanese culture. My research focuses on the gamification of education - how we can make learning more engaging, effective, and fun through game-like elements.
My Japanese Learning Journey
After three years of studying Japanese, I've experienced both the challenges and joys of language learning. From struggling with hiragana and katakana to understanding complex grammar patterns, I know firsthand what learners need to succeed.
🚫 The Problem I Discovered
While trying to learn Japanese through popular language apps, I quickly realized they had significant limitations:
Issues with Traditional Language Apps:
- Cookie-cutter phrases: They only taught predetermined phrases and situations, lacking real-world application
- Limited engagement: Lack of fun, interactive games to help with memorization and retention
- Shallow learning: Focus on repetition without deep understanding of language structure
These limitations became even more apparent when I started taking formal Japanese classes. I could see the gap between what apps taught and what I actually needed to know for real communication.

Combining my research in educational gamification with authentic Japanese language knowledge from formal classes, I created Learndle to address these problems:
